Nature of Leadership - October 4 & 5 2007

This is where your networking opportunities and leadership studies begin. This session will assist you in gaining insight into your own leadership styles and understanding the group dynamics of this course.

Community Development - November 2, 2007
The growth of Canton is very fast-paced and challenging; how is that being managed? This session brings you into the processes that are in place as well as the challenges that are before each of us in our growing community. Conducting a mock Planning Commission meeting and planning a community in a group setting will continue to enhance your leadership skills. A bus tour of the community is included in this session.  Guest Speakers have included director of planning commission, members of the Canton planning department, 
Business and Economic Development - December 7, 2007
Economic development is the key to any successful community. Learn how Canton promotes economic growth through the community planning process and visit several local businesses. Through the tours you will be introduced to some of Canton's business leaders and learn how these companies impact the community. Guest speakers have included Tom Yack, Township Supervisor, and prominent Business developers and owners in the community.
Health and Human Services - January4, 2008

It used to be that you had to go to Detroit or Ann Arbor for good health care, but that is no longer the case. You will explore how Canton continues to increase its resources on all levels. This session is designed to take a look at the health and human services that are available and what is planned for our growing community. Guest Speakers have included various Community representatives from the Health facilities supporting Canton residents
Local, County and State Government - February 1, 2008
In this session you will meet state, county and local government officials. You will learn first hand how they work together to ensure that Canton continues to prosper. You will also gain a better insight as to what each governmental unit is responsible for and why it is vital to work together for a common goal. Guest speakers have included Senator Bruce Patterson, State Representative Phil LaJoy, State Representative, John Stewart, Supreme Court Justice Markman
Education - March 7, 2008

The Plymouth-Canton Community School District is one of the largest in the country. This session is designed to give you a better idea of the vision that will produce tomorrow's leaders. From elementary School to the campus setting at the high schools, you will hear from those who have the responsibility for preparing our youth for the workplace. Local business, private citizens and the school district are partners in providing the education for our future leaders. Guest Speakers have included Jim Ryan, PCEP Schools Superintendent, and various Principals of the schools we have visited as well as other educational representatives from alternative school programs.
Public Safety and the Justice System - April 4, 2008
You may have moved to Canton or located your business here due to is low crime rate. You will see first hand why our community is safe and the steps being taken to ensure that safety continues through our public safety department and court system. This session will remind us that leaders in the community are developed from within Canton's boundaries and the more informed you are the better leader you become. As a homework assignment you will ride along with a Canton Police Officer. Guest Speakers have included John Santamoura, various Department heads of the Police and Fire Departments.
Challenges of the Future - May 2, 2008  Graduation - May 6, 2008
As a leader, how can you use your knowledge to enhance the ever-changing community where you live and work? Students will be challenged to think of the effects of future technology, growth and changing lifestyles on the Canton Community. By completing this course, the graduate will have the tools necessary to assist in continuing to enhance the quality of life in Canton.
Team Projects
Program participants will be given a group project that will positively impact the community. This yearlong project will provide students with the opportunity to experience group dynamics as well as a better understanding of how to put plans into action. The project will be assigned at the first session of Leadership Canton and students will be responsible for working on them outside of class for presentation at graduation, May 6th, 2008
