Alumni Testimonials

Nature of Leadership -
" I truly felt that the Nature of Leadership class was a great way to start my learning process.  It helped me clearly understand my own personality type and how to interact with others so that I was effective in my leadership role.  I also thought it was a tremendous was to learn about the others in the class and make it a more productive learning experience for all of the students.  I look forward to using my newly learned skills."   -  Bartley J. Patterson, RE/MAX Classic, Class of 2000
Community Development -
"I probably learned more about the inner workings of the Canton Community during this session as compared to any other. We spent the day with the policy makers, planners and technical staff and thoroughly viewed how a project moves from idea to reality. Particularly relevant were the sessions where you "developed your subdivision." It is an extremely complicated yet precise process !

The Planning Commission members were helpful, patient and very instructive. At the end of the day, my understanding of Community Planning in Canton had increased tremendously, and this information (and the entertaining manner in which it was presented) is crucial to anyone who desires to become more involved in our community."   -  Micheal Simowski, Senior Alliance,  Class of 2001

Business and Economic Development -
"I really enjoyed the Business and Economic Development Day. We traveled on a bus to some of the local businesses that serve the Canton community. I liked the hands on experience of the day, as well as learning about what each one does to service our area. I found out that some of these local businesses have a global impact as well, as they also provide products internationally." - Diane Syria,  Class of 2004
Health and Human Services -

"No one really finds out first hand what medical facilities are like until they're sick. The Health and human Services session allowed me to visit several local healthcare facilities and to find out what types of services they provide. All are very unique, and offer incredible benefits to the community. The presentation on human service organizations like Growth Works, Senior Alliance, and First Step was also very beneficial, and really opened my eyes to some of the great resources that I didn't even know existed in our community." - Cheryl Gniewek, Canton Chamber of Commerce, Class of 2004

Local, County and State Government -
"I was extremely impressed and learned a great deal of information while attending Leadership Canton's Government Day. The opportunity to meet and discuss issues with members of each branch of state and local government provided invaluable information regarding leadership. It was exhilarating having the opportunity to experience government in action and watching policy making decisions in action. I personally enjoyed the individual time I was able to spend talking individually to one of our State Senators about his experiences." - Brian Spitsbergen,  Growth Works, Class of 2004
Education -
“The greatest benefit a parent can want for their children is higher education. On this day, we were presented with an educational seminar that allowed us to look at all the private and public schools within the Plymouth-Canton Community. Leadership Canton participants had the opportunity to experience first-hand for the day what it was like to see our children learn and experience life at the middle school and high school levels. It showed us that our children are getting a positive force in their lives and that our educational system is preparing our children for an active and varied community where we can all contribute to making our school system work.” - Fred Bolden, Canton Historical Society, Class of 2004
Public Safety and the Justice System

This session left me with such appreciation and respect for Canton Public Safety.  The police ride-along was an amazing opportunity that I was grateful to have.  The officer I rode with welcomed my questions and was eager to show me the different aspects of his work.  The hands-on demonstration at the firehouse and the K-9 unit demonstration were other highlights for me.  The dedication of Canton’s public safety officials was very apparent.  I know that without Leadership Canton I most likely would never have had the opportunity for these experiences - Jessica Klotz, Growth Works, Inc,  Class of 2004

Challenges of the Future
"Futures day gave me insight into developing a personal vision statement and using it as an effective time management tool. I also learned how to develop great vision and mission statements in any organization. The information on new technology was incredible. We have implemented many of these ideas into our business." -  Dr. Judi Fleischaker DVM, Alsager Veterinary Clinic Class of 1998
General Testimonials

Leadership Canton has proven to be extremely valuable to my professional growth. I enjoyed meeting Canton’s leaders, members of the business community, and the participants of the program. It was interesting to visit the township businesses and learn about Canton’s history. I received knowledge of leadership principals and of the community that I will utilize in my role at Schoolcraft College.

I am grateful for each activity, to each person who donated their time to tell of their contribution to the community, to each business that opened its doors to program participants, and to Bart and Judy for the dedication, thought, and commitment they so freely gave.” - Rochelle Schaffrath, Schoolcraft College, Class of 2004
